Learning to read music is essential to communicating with other musicians.

Music is a language unto itself. Given that, how can you communicate if you cannot speak it?

Imagine a choir singing without a written score! Impossible. As far back as we can research, some sort of written notation existed to pass the singing of a generation to the next one, as well as teaching people to sing together.

Before improvisation was the written note.

It all comes down to if you cannot read; you cannot be with a group that reads. This leaves you as a performer left out of a large portion of musical performance venues.

If you can read, you can detect new music. If you can read music you can open up a songbook and discover new worlds. I have found many songs this way that are favorites of mine now and if I did not read I certainly would never have found them.

Find new music you would never know otherwise. Everything you learn is hard at first but soon it becomes a delight and fun. Think of how hard it was at first to ride a bike and how many times you fell over.

Learning to read music will make you a better musician.    Learning to read music will make you a better, well rounded musician and isn’t that worth the effort in itself? That is what we are all striving for. Learn to read music today and be a better musician, you will  not regret it.

This bank holiday was apparently ‘national star wars day’- everybody get ready with the ‘may the forth be with you -hahaha. But this made me think about the movies- and in particular the huge amounts of merchandise that have come out alongside the movies all these years. No one could have predicted how successful this movie was going to be -Even George Lucas didnt know- he just had a shrewd idea of how to market the movies. Taking the merchandising rights allowed him to produced what he wanted to help sell the movie -and when Star wars mania hit the world, he just couldnt keep up with the demand for the promotional merchandise. The cash that came in from all the memorabillia convinced the banks to lend George Lucas the money to film the sequel and put more money into his company Lucasfilm Ltd (and the rest is history).

The movies didnt just change film making -but film marketing to. Ever since there have been art books, action figures, t-shirts and many more items of branded merchandise. The bigger movie companies saw the dollar signs appear in their eyes and started cranking out the merchandise by the thousands- but given the money that was being generated can we blame them? It means more exposure for the movie with people owning he merchandise and much more money for the studios. Because most of us, even if its just one item, have some form of movie merchandise lying around the house -posters, t-shirts, cds, books -the potential for it is huge -and George Lucas took advantage of it to help his ’small space picture’ out.

Okay, I’m sure you’ve gotten an argument with your buddies at some point, comparing who you think are the top 10 guitar players of all time. We’ve all been there, but here’s the thing that few realize. Music isn’t competition, it’s not about who’s the best at this or that. He turned the electric guitar from a novelty into a laboratory, experimenting with sounds never even dreamed of before on the electric guitar. Hendrix has a raw, fuzzy electric sound that is recognizable from the first note, which has been the inspiration of many younger guitarists since. His stage presence is also one of the most mind-blowing and electrifying. “Hey Joe” and “Fire” set the foundation for a solid monument of rock that stands to this day.

2. Jimmy Page
Another Jimmy! The Led Zeppelin guitar master has been very influential to a lot of rockers nowadays, and his guitar licks are legendary and instantly recognizable. His solo of “Heartbreaker” is legendary, and “Black Dog” and “Stairway to Heaven” are earth shattering rock classics. And if you can think of anybody else who has a guitar solo with a violin bow, I’d like to know about it? That’s from “Dazed and Confused”,

3. BB King

6. Kirk Hammett
Metal was changed forever with the coming of Metallica. Kirk Hammett rewrote hard rock history with the pounding solos of “Master of Puppets” and, arguably their most popular song, “Enter Sandman”.

7. Carlos Santana
If you want to talk about instantly recognizable tone, there’s the undisputed King master of Latin-infused rock, Carlos Santana.
